Karlovac is a city in Croatia and an administrative center of Karlovac County. On July 13, 1579, it was named after its founder, Charles II, the Archduke of Austria, of Habsburg dynasty when the six-pointed star-shaped fortress was built up.

Day of Karlovac celebration

Each year on July 13, the Day of Karlovac is celebrated with the traditional birthday ball taking place on the square of Ban Josip Jelacic. The Patron of the City is Josip (Joseph) whose day is honored on March 19.

The city was built and has been kept till the present day as an ideal
Renaissance city and a hexagonal bastioned fortress with the rectangular plan of the city streets. As such, Karlovac represents a rare example of such layout among European cities. From the day of its foundation up to now Karlovac has been developing in the direction of its roads connecting Europe with the Adriatic ports. The historic roads Karolina, Josefina and
Lujzijana in the past as well as nowadays have provided it with the importance of being the trade and traffic center settled between the plains of Slavonia and the ports on the Croatian coast.

The nearest larger cities to Karlovac are Croatian capital city Zagreb and Rijeka city on the coast. You can get there from both cities in about one hour of driving by car or public transport. Also, Slovenia capital Ljubljana is two hours of ride away from Karlovac.
